I am getting ready for the new software development conference here in Copenhagen called “GOTO Copenhagen”. It is an international software development conference with 2 days of training and 3 conference days.

It is pretty hard to decide what to see and hear when there are more than 70 presentation sessions by leading experts and authors. I always start by looking around for people who have a deep insight, are not too mainstream and are good presenters. This year it is Keith Braithwaite, Dave Thomas, Ola Bini and not least Dan North (and a bunch of other software development gurus that I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing yet).

My schedule is still a bit messy but that’s almost always the case with the GOTO/JAOO conferences (it is hard to pick just one presentation per time slot).

You can do your own schedule at http://gotocon.com/cph-2011/schedule/

It is possible to get a great discount if you join: IT People Denmark on LinkedIn (only for people staying in Denmark or speaking Danish) or SUPERCODERS on LinkedIn (open for all). Find the promotion code in the forum and buy the ticket before April 9th 2011.

Do you have any advise on what I shouldn’t miss at GOTO Copenhagen?

If you want to grab a cup of coffee at GOTO Copenhagen please drop me an e-mail at jorgen@larsen.name

The obsession with efficiency makes “dilbert-state-like-companies” that takes decisions based on wrong assumptions. Budgets seems like one of the most dangerous tools if you want a sane company – a budget is in most companies the bible that everyone have to obey but like project plans it can mostly be put in the category of wishful thinking that have the extra bonus that management have a hard time seeing the really good ideas that could make the cash counter go ding ding ding!

Dan North gave a marvelous talk at the Øredev conference 2009 about “The obsession with efficiency” with a nice technology twist:

Dan North mentions the BBRT – Beyond Budgeting Roundtable as an alternative to budgeting.

I can really recommend Tom DeMarco’s book ‘Slack: Getting Past Burn-out, Busywork, and the Myth of Total Efficiency‘.

Today the network hit 600 people! and the discussions treads seems to sparkle more and more… (600 may not seem as a lot but for a local network for people located in Denmark with a interest in Scrum I think it is pretty good). I can’t think how it would be possible to connect 600 people in 8-9 months if it hadn’t been for the help of LinkedIn – great platform! Lets hit 1000 members in 2009…

My first real encounter with Scrum (a software development process framework) was in a airplane from San Francisco to Copenhagen in 2002. I read, thought and tried to understand the philosophy of Scrum in 8 hours with too little leg room but enough room for a little brain activity I think the most important thing I adopted was the mindset of the empirical process model.

The empirical model of process control provides and exercises control through frequent inspection and adaptation for processes that are imperfectly defined and generate unpredictable and unrepeatable outputs.

I think the implementation of software mostly fails when managers and customers tries to use a defined process control model – trying to make a safe environment is a quite natural human action but when doing software it normally only saves you from top management and not from project failure

SCRUM defines a simple solution on how to inspect/monitor and adapt to the unexpected. Please remember that simple solutions can be hard to implement (mainly because people need to adapt to a new way of thinking).

Read more about SCRUM at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCRUM

Since I now am a dedicated Mac OS user and the WIremote app. only runs on Microsoft Windows with Windows Media Player installed I saw no reason for not making it possible for others to do further work on the project.

I removed the key registration check code from the source code (I hope it stills compiles). Since I have no Microsoft Windows with development tools I hope someone will make a new installer with the current source code.

Google App Engine makes it easy to build an application that runs reliably, even under heavy load and with large amounts of data. The environment includes the following features:

dynamic web serving, with full support for common web technologies

persistent storage with queries, sorting and transactions

automatic scaling and load balancing

APIs for authenticating users and sending email using Google Accounts

a fully featured local development environment that simulates Google App Engine on your computer

Google App Engine applications are implemented using the Python programming language. The runtime environment includes the full Python language and most of the Python standard library.

Here is a video about developing and deploying an app on the Google App Engine:
